The Virginia Creeper Trail
1987
Damascus, Washington County, Virginia
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
A logging railroad so slow uphill that crews named it the Creeper became thirty four miles of rail trail, most of it downhill from Whitetop if you take the shuttle, which almost everyone does. It runs into Damascus, where the Appalachian Trail comes off the mountain and goes straight down the main street past the outfitters. The town calls itself Trail Town USA and has the through-hiker traffic to back it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
