Crozet's Blue Ridge Tunnel
1858
Afton, Nelson County, Virginia
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Claudius Crozet drove nearly a mile of railroad tunnel through the Blue Ridge with black powder, hand drills and Irish immigrant crews working from both ends, and when the headings met in 1858 they were inches out of line. It was the longest tunnel in America and it was dug without a single machine. Cholera killed men by the dozen in the shanty camps. The bore reopened as a walking trail in 2020, dripping and dead straight.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
