The Vanderbilt mausoleum
1886
New Dorp, Staten Island
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Cornelius Vanderbilt began as a Staten Island boatman and his descendants came back to bury him here, on a private plot beside the Moravian Cemetery. Richard Morris Hunt designed the Romanesque tomb and Frederick Law Olmsted laid out the grounds, at the moment the family was the richest in the United States. It is closed to the public and always has been.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
