The Vandalia State House, where Lincoln learned the legislature
1836
Vandalia, Illinois
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Illinois governed itself from here for two decades, and it is where a young Lincoln served four terms and worked the deal that moved the capital to Springfield. It is also where the National Road ran out of money and stopped, which is why the highway that was meant to reach the Mississippi ends at a courthouse square in Fayette County.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
