The House Divided speech
Old State Capitol, Springfield, Illinois
Amos Oliver Doyle · CC BY-SA 4.0 · Wikimedia Commons
Accepting the Republican nomination for the Senate, Lincoln opened with a house divided against itself cannot stand, and his friends told him the line would cost him the election. It did: Douglas kept the seat. It also made him a national figure, which is what put him on a ballot two years later. The chamber is restored to the year he spoke in it, and his body lay in the same room in 1865.
