The two-mile accelerator under the freeway

The longest straight building in the world runs two miles under Interstate 280, accelerating electrons to within a whisker of light speed. Work done at the far end of it found the quark, and three separate Nobel prizes came out of the machine. The first web server outside Europe was also here, because the physicists needed to read each other's papers.
