An army camp where the doughboys of two wars had trained was handed to physicists, who built accelerators in the pine barrens and won seven Nobel prizes with them, the muon neutrino, the charm quark, the antiproton. The reactors also made the first medical tracers and the drug that briefly woke the frozen patients of Oliver Sacks's Awakenings.
