The Trollway

When the bypass took the through traffic away in the 1980s, Mount Horeb leaned on its Norwegian ancestry and filled Main Street with trolls: around forty of them now, carved, painted or cut out of logs with a chainsaw, each with a name and a job: the Chicken Thief, the Accordion Player, Sweet Swill. The Chamber of Commerce renamed the street the Trollway. It declared itself the Troll Capital of the World, and separately the Mustard Capital of the World, right up until the mustard museum moved to Middleton.
