Teenage taxidermist Douglas Herrick grafted deer antlers onto a jackrabbit here in 1932 and invented the jackalope, the American West's official fake animal. The town leaned all the way in: an eight-foot statue on Center Street, jackalope hunting licenses valid only on June 31 for licensed pilots of temperament, and a annual celebration of the lie. The original mount was stolen decades ago, which the town treats as proof of its value.
