Just before one in the morning on 27 November 2019 a pipe carrying butadiene ruptured at the TPC Group plant and let go six thousand gallons in under a minute before it found an ignition source. The blast was felt thirty miles away. About fifty thousand people across Port Neches, Groves, Nederland and part of Port Arthur were ordered out on the day before Thanksgiving. Federal investigators traced it to popcorn polymer, a hazard the industry knows well and the company had not controlled.
