The Three Pigeons, the tavern that stood in for a town for two centuries
1893
Six Corners, New Durham, North Bergen, New Jersey
A two storey house at the foot of the Palisades, open since the 1700s, the Three Pigeons was the meeting place and the landmark for this side of Bergen Township through the Revolutionary period. Directions out here were given by it because there was little else to give them by. It closed in 1893. Its crossing of Tonnelle Avenue and the Hackensack Plank Road is still called Six Corners, a name now carried by a laundromat and a cafe in the New Durham neighbourhood.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
