The Plainfield Halfway House, midway on the stage line from Chicago to Ottawa

Squire Arnold, Plainfield's first postmaster, put up a small building here in 1834 to serve as the post office and a stagecoach stop, and by 1836 a two storey tavern and inn stood beside it. The name came from its position at the midpoint of the stage line between Chicago and Ottawa. It was big enough to double as the village meeting hall, and the Plainfield Light Artillery used it as a headquarters from 1856 until the Civil War. It stopped taking guests in 1886.
