The Tehachapi Loop, where a train crosses over itself

To climb out of the San Joaquin Valley the Southern Pacific spiralled the track through a full circle in three-quarters of a mile, so a train long enough passes directly over its own rear cars. It was dug largely by Chinese labourers with hand tools and black powder, and remains one of the busiest freight routes in the country.
