The Switchback Railway, America's first roller coaster

LaMarcus Adna Thompson designed it in 1881 and built it at Coney Island in 1884. A rider paid five cents, climbed a tower, and coasted six hundred feet down to a second tower at a little over six miles an hour, where the car was switched to a return track and sent back. Thompson went on to build scenic railways all over the country, some of which ran until 1954.
