A bathing beach on a Lake Erie peninsula that opened in 1870 grew into the park that coaster builders use to one-up each other: Cedar Point has broken the world height record repeatedly and markets itself, with justification, as the roller coaster capital of the world. It is the second-oldest operating amusement park in the country, and on a clear day the ride queues can see Canada.
