The Slinky factory
Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania
Roger McLassus · CC BY-SA 3.0 · Wikimedia Commons
A naval engineer watched a torsion spring walk off a shelf in 1943 and his wife Betty named the result out of a dictionary. When he left the company, and the country, for a religious sect in Bolivia, Betty James ran Slinky herself for four decades from Hollidaysburg, where the toy is still wound on the original machines. More than 350 million have walked downstairs alone or in pairs.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
