The Ridges Sanctuary
1937
Baileys Harbor, Wisconsin

The county planned a trailer park and picnic ground on a series of old beach ridges that hold twenty-five native orchid species. Emma Toft and a group of botanists fought it and won, creating Wisconsin's first private natural area. Each ridge is a former shoreline of the lake, so walking inland from the water is walking back through about a thousand years of plant succession.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
