Built in a year flat after Pearl Harbor and still the country's main source of the propellant that fires artillery and small arms, which makes a quiet stretch of the New River one of the strategically load-bearing places in the United States. It employed more than twenty thousand people at its wartime peak. Steam and the smell of nitric acid over the water are ordinary weather in Radford.
