Yulee, and the railroad that crossed Florida
1861
Yulee, Florida
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
David Levy Yulee chartered the Florida Railroad in 1853 and pushed it from Fernandina on the Atlantic to Cedar Key on the Gulf so cargo could skip the wrecking grounds off the Keys. It opened on 1 March 1861 at 156 miles, the longest line finished in Florida before the Civil War, and enslaved workers built most of it. Yulee was the first person of Jewish ancestry elected to the United States Senate and he enslaved more than a thousand people on his Homosassa plantation.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
