The Atlantic Avenue Tunnel, the oldest subway tunnel in the world

Crews roofed over a rail cut beneath Atlantic Avenue in seven months and opened the tunnel in December 1844, so trains could reach the ferry without running down the middle of the street. Brooklyn banned steam locomotives inside the city in the 1850s, the tunnel was sealed, and it passed out of memory. Bob Diamond found it again in 1980 at the age of 20 by going down through a manhole, and ran tours through the half mile of it until the city pulled his permit in 2010. Guinness lists it as the oldest subway tunnel in the world.
