Garfield Farm, an 1846 teamster inn on the wheat road to Chicago
1846
La Fox, Illinois
Timothy Garfield bought a settler's 1835 claim in 1841 and took travellers in at the log house, then built a brick inn in 1846 for the teamsters hauling grain between the Fox Valley farms and Chicago. Four generations of the family held it, and the last of them, Elva Ruth Garfield, made it a museum in 1977 instead of selling the land for houses. Eighteen old buildings are still up on the 375 acres, including the inn and an 1842 barn, and the fields carry Merino sheep, Milking Devon oxen and Black Java chickens rather than modern stock.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
