The Peninsular Paper Dam, kept for a century then voted away
1867
Peninsular Paper Dam, Huron River, Ypsilanti, Michigan

Built across the Huron in 1867 to run a paper mill, the concrete gravity dam later carried a hydroelectric station and backed up a 177 acre pond that most of Ypsilanti grew up thinking was a natural stretch of river. The power station is long decommissioned and the structure had become a maintenance bill the city could not keep paying. In May 2019 the Ypsilanti council voted to take the dam out altogether rather than repair it again.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
