Elisha Otis worked out a brake that catches an elevator car when its rope parts, and in 1853 he opened the first factory in the world built to make them, on the Yonkers shore of the Hudson. Otis manufactured in the city for 130 years, turning out tanks here during the Second World War, and closed the plant in 1983. One of the surviving factory buildings reopened in 2002 as the Riverfront Library.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
