Ford's Chicago Assembly Plant has been building cars on Torrence Avenue since 1924
1924
Chicago, Illinois
Ford began turning out Model Ts here on March 3, 1924, in a 640,000 square foot Albert Kahn building that cost roughly 8 million dollars. It opened as the company's largest factory outside Detroit, with about 2,000 workers and a target of 600 cars a day. The line has run through the Depression, armored vehicle work in the Second World War and a long stretch of Taurus sedans, and it builds the Explorer now. Ford counts it as the oldest continuously operating assembly plant in the company.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
