John Haviland, the architect of Eastern State Penitentiary and the state prison at Trenton, designed the Essex County Jail that opened here in 1837. It is the oldest public building in the county, and the roughly twenty structures on the site were added across a century, so the complex reads as a record of how American jails kept changing their minds. Men arrested in the 1967 Newark rebellion were held here. The jail closed in 1970, has stood empty since 1971, and was placed on the National Register in 1991.
