Eastern State, the prison that invented solitary
1829
Fairmount, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The prison that invented solitary confinement as a philosophy, built like a Gothic castle so the architecture itself would frighten. Capone served his first sentence in a cell furnished with rugs and a radio, still on display. It stands today as a stabilized ruin you can walk.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
