The Old Atlanta Prison Farm, worked by inmates for seventy years

From roughly 1920 until 1990 the city of Atlanta ran a farm in southwest DeKalb County where prisoners grew food for the jail system. The written record is thin, especially after 1965, so a great deal of what happened on the site is simply not documented. The buildings were abandoned in 1995 and the land became part of the South River Forest, a 3,500 acre green space that conservationists have been trying to protect since 2000.
