John J. Donovan's Beaux Arts auditorium opened beside Lake Merritt in 1915 with three venues stacked into one building: an arena seating close to 5,500, the smaller Calvin Simmons Theatre and a ballroom. It was renamed for the industrialist Henry J. Kaiser after a 1984 renovation. A seismic retrofit brought it back as the Henry J. Kaiser Center for the Arts in 2023, and it is number 27 on Oakland's landmark list.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
