The Oak Park Conservatory and the parking lot it nearly became
1929

The collection started in 1914 with plants Oak Park residents carried home from their travels, and the Edwardian glasshouse built to hold it went up in 1929. By 1970 it had run down far enough that some people wanted the site cleared for parking, and a citizens committee formed to save it. Some of the plants growing inside date back to that original 1914 collection.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
