The New York Transit Museum opens in an abandoned subway station

Court Street station opened in 1936 as a terminal for local trains and hardly anyone used it, so the shuttle serving it was dropped in 1946 and the platforms sat dark for thirty years. The Transit Authority reopened the station on July 4, 1976 as a two month bicentennial exhibit of old rolling stock. The exhibit never closed. It is now the largest museum of public transit in North America, and its platform holds a line of vintage cars visitors can walk through.
