The Richmond County poor farm opened here in 1829 on ninety one acres, offering room and board to the destitute in exchange for farm labour. When Staten Island joined New York City in 1898 the city took it over and renamed it the Farm Colony, and by the early 1900s more than 800 residents were working sixty three acres of crops. It closed in 1975 and the dormitories stand empty in the woods across Brielle Avenue from Sea View Hospital.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
