The Northern Pacific went bankrupt and paid its bondholders in land, which produced wheat farms of twenty and thirty thousand acres run like factories, gangs of hired men, dozens of binders working a single field in echelon, and a manager rather than a family. They were the first industrial-scale farms in America and were widely written up as the future of agriculture, then broke up within a generation.
