Larry Giles spent four decades stripping terra cotta, ironwork and cut stone off buildings queued for demolition, most of them across the river in St. Louis. In 2007 the hoard moved into the Sterling Steel Casting foundry in Sauget, which had opened in 1923 and shut in 2001, and it now fills about twelve acres of casting sheds and pattern stores. It is thought to be the largest collection of American architectural artifacts anywhere.
