Raymond Menard and Julian Archer started the club in 1922, in a building put up two years earlier, as a place for Detroit's Black professional men to relax and make contacts. The name is American spelled backwards. It opened as the Great Migration pushed the city's Black population well past the bounds of Black Bottom and out along Tireman Avenue. Women were admitted as members in 1968.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
