The Frances Harper Inn, a Black women's club house for women arriving alone
1915
Horton Street, Detroit

The Christian Industrial Club, founded in 1904 by a nurse named Etta Foster Taylor, bought this Queen Anne house on Horton Street in 1915 and opened it to Black women and girls who reached Detroit with no family to take them in. The Great Migration was bringing young women north alone into a city where that made them easy to exploit. The club ran the inn until about 1950 and named it for the abolitionist Frances Ellen Watkins Harper.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
