The Morton Homestead and the first documented log cabin in America
1698
Prospect Park, Pennsylvania
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Morton Mortenson, a Finn who came over under the New Sweden colony, settled this ground on Darby Creek in 1654, and parts of the standing log building date to about 1698. It is the earliest documented example of log cabin construction in the country, a Scandinavian building method that later spread across the whole American frontier. His great grandson John Morton signed the Declaration of Independence.
