The Martin-Boismenue House, built when this was still French Illinois
1790
East Carondelet, Illinois
CC0 · Wikimedia Commons
Pierre Martin put this house up around 1790 by the post on sill method French builders used across the Illinois Country, standing heavy timbers upright on a wooden sill instead of stacking them flat like a log cabin. It went up while the American Bottom was still culturally French, a generation before Illinois was a state. The State of Illinois owns it now and keeps it as a historic site rather than a residence.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
