The Morcom Rose Garden, built by Depression relief labour
1934
Rose Garden, Oakland, California
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Oakland businessmen proposed a municipal rose garden in 1930 and the landscape architect Arthur Cobbledick laid it out as a terraced amphitheatre stepping down a residential canyon near the Piedmont line. New Deal relief labour built it, though not the WPA: the work was done by a state emergency relief agency and finished in 1934 and 1935. It was renamed in 1954 for a former Oakland mayor and still carries heirloom varieties that survive almost nowhere else.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
