The landscape gardener O. C. Simonds, a Michigan graduate, laid out these 128 hilly acres against the Huron River and the arboretum opened in 1907. It holds over 400 species including 110 kinds of tree, and the W. E. Upjohn Peony Garden inside it is the largest collection of heirloom peonies on the continent. The land came in part from Esther Connor Nichols and her husband Walter, whose name it carries.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
