John Steven McGroarty's Mission Play, a three hour pageant on the history of the California missions, was first staged in 1912 across from the San Gabriel mission and was eventually seen by more than two million people. Arthur Burnett Benton designed this theatre for it between 1923 and 1927, with a front modelled on Mission San Antonio de Padua. The building still works as a performing arts venue.
