Mesa was founded by Mormon settlers who dug out the old Hohokam canals to farm, and the temple is the monument to that. Church president Heber J. Grant announced it in 1919, broke ground in 1922 and dedicated it in 1927. It was the seventh operating temple in the church and the first in Arizona.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
