1839
Hancock County, Illinois

Latter-day Saints drained a swamp on a bend of the Mississippi and built a city that briefly rivalled Chicago in size, with its own militia and charter. They abandoned it in 1846 and walked west. The temple was burned and then flattened by a tornado.
