The Joseph Smith obelisk
1905
Sharon, Vermont
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The founder of the Latter-day Saints was born on this hill farm in 1805, and on the centennial the church raised a polished granite obelisk 38 and a half feet tall, one foot for each year of his life, hauled up the winter roads by horse. It was the heaviest single shaft quarried in America at the time. The memorial and visitor center sit quietly in hardwood forest, a major pilgrimage site in a state with almost no Mormons.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
