Texas Masons opened a home for widows and orphans here in 1889 and it ran its own school district from 1913, which meant the orphanage fielded its own football team. Rusty Russell took over the program in 1929 with about 160 high school students to draw from and won 127 games against schools with thousands. The Mighty Mites played into the top classification in the state and tied Corsicana in the 1932 championship game. The home closed in 2005 and the campus is a National Register historic district.
