The Golden Delicious tree
1912
Clay County, West Virginia
Ivar Leidus · CC BY-SA 4.0 · Wikimedia Commons
A chance seedling on Anderson Mullins's hillside farm produced a yellow apple good enough that the Stark Brothers nursery paid five thousand dollars for the tree in 1914 and then built a steel cage around it with an alarm. Every Golden Delicious in the world descends from that one trunk. It is the state fruit, and Clay County still holds a festival for it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
