The Longfellow Bridge, salt and pepper over the Charles

The steel arch bridge opened in 1906 as the Cambridge Bridge, replacing the West Boston Bridge of 1793, and was built wide enough to carry rapid transit down the middle. Red Line trains still run between the traffic lanes. The four stone towers on the piers look enough like cruet sets that nobody in Boston calls it anything but the Salt and Pepper Bridge.
