The Lincoln Tunnel and the helix that drops traffic down the Palisades

The first tube opened on 22 December 1937 and 7,661 cars paid fifty cents to use it that day. The New Jersey side had a problem Manhattan did not: King's Bluff, the Palisades cliff standing between the portal and the highway. Engineers answered with a three quarter circle of roadway winding down the rock face, which drivers called the corkscrew. Two more tubes followed in 1945 and 1957, and since 1970 one lane of the approach has been reversed every weekday morning for buses alone.
