The lake that sailed away

In 1871 the sinkhole that drains this prairie clogged, and the whole basin became Alachua Lake, deep enough that steamboats ran passengers and oranges across it for twenty years. In 1891 the sink cleared and the lake simply left, going down the drain over a few months and stranding a steamer in the mud. The prairie now carries wild-roaming bison and horses, and the sink at Alachua is still quietly deciding whether to do it again.
