Mountain Lake, which keeps emptying
2008
Mountain Lake, Giles County, Virginia

One of only two natural lakes in Virginia sits in a rock basin that leaks, and roughly every four hundred years the plug at the bottom opens and the lake drains away to a pond before slowly refilling. It went nearly dry after 2008 and the resort spent years watching mud where the water had been. Sediment cores show it has done this since the last ice age, entirely indifferent to the hotel on its shore.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
