Reservoir No. 3, a walled lake the city forgot
1871
Summit Avenue at Reservoir Avenue, Jersey City, New Jersey
Jersey City built this holding reservoir on the Heights between 1871 and 1880, ringed by a stone wall heavy enough to look Egyptian. It was drained and abandoned in 1980 and then simply left, and over the following decades an ecosystem assembled itself inside the walls with swans, herons and peregrine falcons in the middle of a dense neighbourhood. The city has since been restoring it as a park.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
